The history of Ferndown isn’t as well documented as some neighbouring areas. This is because the area was mostly covered in heathland until the early 1900s. Many of the residential areas of Ferndown today weren’t there around 100 years ago. Ferndown’s most recent history is that the village has grown over the last century into a large residential area, convenient for access to the whole area's amenities and for communters or visitors to the area, now boasting the largest inland population and surpassing Dorchester. This has been helped by the creation of two notable golf courses.
The Ferndown property market is dominated by professionals, retirees and families wishing to take advantage of leafier surroundings while remaining close to major towns with employment opportunities in Bournemouth and Poole. As a characterful English town in Dorset steeped in history and littered with preserved buildings, much of the Ferndown property market is made up of beautiful semi-detached and detached properties. Yet, you can still find modern flats in the areas, including retirement flats for dwellers over 55.
Not only will you be able to find Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian homes here, but there are even some older Stuart period homes and Tudor homes that come onto the market. If you’re looking for a Dorset home that offers space and character, Ferndown is one of the go-to locations for your property search. That being said, there are still properties in the area that will tick the boxes of modern home seekers, including new developments and first-class renovated flats and houses.
Some of the most sought after areas where you’ll find the large executive homes are on Lone Pine Drive, Golf Links Road, Dudsbury Road, Chine Walk area and Beaufoys Ave area. Here you’ll find large period and modern homes with different sized gardens, all offering unmatched privacy and a personal Dorset oasis. Several small hamlets and villages located nearby offer the same style of impressive properties packed with charm. Two nearby locations with sought-after properties are Staplehill, Ashley Heath and West Parley. The former has the shortest high street in Britain at just 40 metres and the latter is a sublime village with tree-lined streets.
Considerations before you buy property in Ferndown
